In the following weeks we will show some lovely pictures from Miss Holland at the Miss Universe pageant... 

1989 Angela Visser became Miss Universe in 1989. She is still the only Miss Holland who got the Miss Universe crown. We have to wait just one day to find out if Avalon will be the second woman from the Netherlands to become Miss Universe.

1960

When Avalon had the luck to go swimming with some dolphins some had less luck. In 1960 Miss Holland Carina Verbeek had the change to meet and touch a snake!

On the picture she is at the far left. We are not sure whether she is laughing or shouting with fright on this picture.

1975

Miss Holland 1975 Lynda Snippe is waiting to show her dress to the jury at the evening gown prelimenaries for the Miss Universe 1975 pageant.

For Lynda the whole Miss Universe pageant had no happy ending. Not because she did not become a semi finalist, but because there was a fight about 100 gulden (the old dutch money) that she did not receive as she told the press in Holland. The Miss Holland organisation at that time told her that she should have had the money in El Salvador where the Miss Universe pageant took place that year. It was pocket money handed out by the Miss Universe organisation. Lynda did not accept that explanation. In the end Lynda was dethroned and replaced by Cora Kitz.

1993

Miss Universe Netherlands 1993 was Angelique van Zalen. She just missed the top 10 as she was placed 15 after the preleminary rounds. On the picture we see Miss van Zalen after the swimsuit preleminary. Also on the picture is Miss Mexico, after missing the semi final, the audience went crazy and were booing the whole swimsuit final. 

1965

There she is Anja Schuit. Hollands first finalist at the Miss Universe pageant. For our second finalist we had to wait until 1989 when Angela Visser was the second  finalist but also the first winner from the Netherlands. Anja would be the 4th Ru in te end. 

1976

Our own Nanny Nielen went to Hong Kong in 1976. Nanny shared many memories from al of her adventures at the national and international pageants with us. From the 1976 Miss Universe pageant: How Miss Venezula fell in the swimmingpool    and her friendship with Miss Nicaragua... 

1962...

It was not Miss Holland 1962 Rina Lodders who would represent the Netherlands at the Miss Universe pageant. It was runner up Marianne van der Hayden who would go to Miami Beach. We see her here with several other participants. 

Miss Holland Rina Lodders won the Miss World title later that year and married Chubby Checker....

1980...

Here we see Miss Holland 1980 Karin Gooyer at  the traditional parade in Seoul, Korea. Karin is wearing the national costume that is so typical for the Netherlands in those days. It is in fact not a national costume but the traditional costume for the little town of Volendam. It is still worn today by many, specially older women.
